5 game changing innovations: Koen and Associates – from a one-man band to an award winning company

Winner of the National Business Awards Top Young Executive of the Year discusses five key approaches for business success.

CEO of Koen & Associates Architecture, Brodwen Koen, winner of the National Business Awards Top Young Executive of the Year speaks about the importance of 5 key approaches for business success.

From a one-man operation in 2011 to the current staff complement of twenty, comprising architects, technologist, project manager, administrative staff and office cleaner, Brodwen looks back with pride as he sees his fledgling take flight. The road travelled was filled with setbacks, disappointments and unbelievable challenges (such as breaking into a close-knit industry) – but all that fades in the glow of the satisfaction of building his own company.

Starting out he had to outperform and under-price existing suppliers – and even then he was not guaranteed the contract.

What were his game changing innovation and strategies?

Leadership

We prefer to have hands on approach and keeping our clients involved.

Innovation

We maintain a good balance between using innovative technology and practical application. Our designs epitomise functionality, and usefulness on an everyday basis. They encompass the physical aspect of people gathering in a space designed for purpose, whilst still addressing the artefact.

Recognising opportunity

Our continued approached is to keep making inroads in the local market and yet at the same time expand our service offering to the African continent.

Collaboration

By starting our own developments, we will be collaborating with other developers and at the same time expanding our client base. As architects we recognise opportunity everywhere.

Job creation and skills development

Koen and Associates Architecture has taken graduates without experience and developed them into sought after designers.
